Happy 2008 everybody, I hope that the new year brings all kinds of new excitement, enthusiasm, and a renewed appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us! And, of course, success in anything you set your mind too…
On a lighter note, I’d like to officially denounce the rumor that “You cannot ride a bike in the snow.” Although this has never been outright said, I think the idea is ingrained in each of us to at least a sliver of belief.
Bikes can be ridden in snow (and to a lesser extent, slush, ice, and sleet).
Those of you who know me personally know my leanings toward simplicity, and I also want to make sure that this world is as beautiful when my grandkids are around as they are today. For that reason, I ride a bike as much as possible. Living in German Village (in downtown Columbus) that can be pretty easy… a mega-grocery store is only minutes away, and the coffee shop where I dwindle away hours (and where I sit at this very moment) are only blocks away from my home. So as hard as the bicycle life might sound, it’s much easier- and cheaper- than you’d think. Well, maybe not CHEAPER than you’d think.
OK, so onto the snow/bike/ugly rumor that we were talking about at first. Yes, you can ride a bike in a few inches of snow, and it really isn’t even that much more difficult than riding normally. You just dress as if you are going skiing, and your body-heat keeps you at a pretty comfortable temperature. It’s really not that big of a deal. In fact, my traction seems to be a lot better than the cars I see skidding around and going in circles…
The best part of the whole experience is seeing the looks on the faces of the people as they see someone riding by in the snow… it’s priceless.
