What is The Popcorn Method?

The popcorn method grew out of a problem I had recently. I needed to put a ton of content up quickly on a new WordPress-powered website and it all had to rank well.

This is quite a serious task to be given, and the fact that the website was new and had no inbound links to speak of or pagerank made the situation more dire.

After thinking long and hard about how to do this, it became apparent to me that we needed to step back and find a way to see where our content ranked already. We had to be able to define exactly what the problem was (ie, where are pages ranked once they were put up online and indexed… even if it was 8 pages deep in Google) and then we could optimize those pages that ranked lower than we wanted and track how well those changes worked.

So instead of saying something un-actionable like…

We need to get lots of inbound links” (well, links to what page and with what anchor text is the next logical question that we wouldn’t have an answer to) or…

We need to rank better!” (How and what pages actually need to rank better?)

We could look and see that our page about “Unicorn Boarding” was on page 6 for the search “boarding your unicorn” on Google. Once we know that, we can use best practices to improve the rank of that page for that search term.

This makes the job of “optimizing” a lot less ambiguous.

The process I’m about to show you will allow you to discover the keywords people are using to find your site, see where you rank for those keywords, and then monitor your site’s ranking improvements over time.

This guide will not show you how to make those pages rank better. That information is available widely across the internet and I actually write about it a lot on my website at bradleyspencer.com.

However, if you follow this guide you will master a research process that will give you information that makes you smarter and better equipped to optimize your site than 95% of the webmasters out there who perform SEO.

The sad truth is that very few people articulate their SEO project to the degree that this guide will show you how to. Most people are just working blindly to optimize, optimize, optimize.

This guide will show you how to focus your efforts so a little bit of work makes a big (and trackable) difference.

If you are working for a client or boss and they want to see what your efforts have amounted to, this method will give you an indisputable way to keep track.

If you have hired an SEO firm in the past and want to know if they are doing their job, this guide will let you silently make sure that they are doing their job.

The one thing I will mention about Google Analytics is I have “heard” not to use it for affiliate websites, I have just heard some horror stories about sites losing rankings because it was an affiliate site and used GA.

Of course one can never be completely sure the validity of the statements but I have been using Stat Counter: http://www.statcounter.com/ for a while now and I really like it. For me it is easier to use than GA, gives great info, is free and does the job. The free version is limited to the last 500 visitor statistics which can be limiting for some people but it keeps track of the KW’s and so forth and overall does a damn good job.

Nice paper Brad, I use this for all my KW research: http://www.kyleblakeallred.com/awesome/FreeKeywordTool That is the Best KW research tool hands down IMHO.
