My Web Design Philosophy
There are many people out there who specialize in creating high-flying, graphically pleasing websites. And they are amazing at what they do. But, what if no one can find the site through search engines? What if the site isn’t profitable because it’s just too fancy and hard to use? When it comes to websites – simple is always better.
In fact, there are a whole bunch of issues that come up with overly complex websites. Take a look:
- If your site has Java, you are going to have some SEO (Search Engine Optimization) problems, this equates to less traffic.
- If your site uses flash to have videos, you have long download times, bad SEO, and bad usability.
- If you use a different language than your customers, you’ve got bad usability. For example, if you have a link to “Map” and your customer is looking for “Directions to Our Store”, then people are going to hesitate and leave.
- And much, much, more.
So now that you know what not to do, what do you do?
The best website you can design takes the principles of Usability, SEO, a great Content Management System (like Wordpress!), and a few other little tricks that gets you:
- Consistent traffic from Google, AOL, MSN, and Yahoo
- Simple navigation so users can quickly buy a product or contact you
- A personal connection with your visitors so they are inclined to come back often
- And above all, a website that is easy to manage! Meaning you will be able to update the site whenever your choose.
