OK, well maybe that’s a big claim. Let’s say this instead: If every lawyer was as innovative as Virginia Cornwell, then finding a lawyer online would be a lot more fun.

The Law Offices of Virginia Cornwell is an amazing Columbus, Ohio Family Law and Columbus Ohio Divorce Lawyer. They have developed some very comprehensive pages on their site that layout all of the different visitation schedules for each of the different counties in Ohio. (This was not an easy task, let me tell you). (more…)

A silent re-design took place, and some great search engine rankings followed. Find out how.

I’ve never promised that my design sense is all that great. I’ll leave that to the specialists who could run circles around me in Photoshop, Fireworks, or Illustrator.

But, if you come by this blog much, then you likely noticed that a redesign silently took place.

It was time: I’d heard the last design was everything from “offensive”, “childish”, and downright terrible. The sad thing is- I agreed.

So I finally made time to redo everything. Inspiration awards go out to Dive Into Mark, colourlovers, and the entire redesign was powered by Gala Apples and Chipotle.

Until today, I wasn’t sure if the design was doing-it-for-me. That was, until about 30 minutes ago. (more…)

What unknown factors is Google using to improve their algorithm and how can we optimize for those too?

Update: I’d like to thank all of the Sphinners out there who helped put this article on the front page. A special thanks goes out to these two who helped get this article there. Thanks!

We all know that Google uses the Click Thru Rate (CTR) in their paid listings. Heck, you can even see the CTR of each of your own running ads in the Google Adwords dashboard.

So with that same technology, is it sensible to think they use the same technology to improve the relevancy of their organic results too?

Case + Point:

Google has a limited amount of factors that they can distill from their own personal analytics. With that set of data, they have to try and extract the most meaning possible.

If Google serves the same 10 results for “Wordpress Consulting” over and over then hypothetically each result should get 10% of the clicks. (more…)

How does the Slumping US Economy Affect Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Firms?

When the economy goes into recession, a good many business owners tighten their wallets and get ready to weather the storm (and for good reason). Often times, the first thing to get cut from the budget is advertising.

But strangely, my Search Engine Optimization business has really taken off lately. So I started asking myself “why?“.

It seems SEO is different from regular advertising in many ways. Good SEO just works in a down economy where other types of direct advertising fail. Let’s take a look at..

5.5 reasons why SEO is the choice a lot of business owners invest in while pulling back the reins on traditional advertising.

1. Track your EXACT Return on Investment (ROI)

Traditional advertising is a “throw it against the wall and see what sticks”. I don’t know about you, but that isn’t the way I want to spend my advertising dollars when every penny counts.

Search Engine Optimization is different. With SEO, you can literally track almost every aspect of how you were found, the keywords that were used, and even if they eventually purchased something from you. With that knowledge, you can continually improve your strategy to jive with the market. Try doing that with traditional advertising.

Some updates about Wordpress SEO and Web Design by Brad Spencer on this first day of May, 2008.

Well it is finally May and it looks like all of the snow has passed. Sorry that updates have been few and far between here, but things have been pretty busy. Here are some updates for those interested parties:

Single Mom Seeking is a blog and book by Rachel Sarah. I’ve been working with her over the last couple weeks to redesign her blog and make it more of a magazine-style theme. The official launch is going to be this weekend, so look for a link and some updates as this weekend rolls around. (PS. Rachel’s blog is awesome, you should really check it out…)

A huge thank you goes out to my buddy Lawrence LaFerla over at Japanese Translation who featured a guest post by yours truly about SEO for Wordpress. You can see the article here. Lawrence is a fellow yogi and musician and an all-around great guy. If you ever need translation services, he is the man for the job.

That’s it for now, but there will be more on the way… so stay tuned and remember that I’m never more than an email away….

It’s a short guide to simple, easy-to-implement techniques that will help get your Wordpress Blog indexed and rank for the keywords you’re going after.

The ebook has sold well and I’m very proud of the positive response from the readers of the Wordpress SEO Blueprint.

As my skills and focus have developed and changed, I realized that to up the ante in the Search Engine Optimization world, it’s important to let your secrets go eventually. That’s why this ebook is now available to everybody for free. (more…)

Wordpress landing pages and how they affect the continuity of your Wordpress Blog.

How does having two distinctly different webpage designs on one site affect the continuity and branding of your site?

This question has been on my mind a lot. Some of my pages are starting to operate more as landing pages (gasp!) then as blog pages. This might be true for some pages of your blog also. So my thought was to take some of the more frequented pages that I’d like people to read without the typical “Internet ADD” and move them to a more simple design that is comfortable to read and easier for deeper reading- not just scanning.

Here is my current design with green lines through the sections that might just steal people’s attention away from the content they came to see: (more…)

Are you about to launch your business, but need some grassroots online marketing to help it take off?

Do you have a brick-and-morter business and need someone to handle everything online?

There are so many great ideas out there just waiting to get the audience they deserve. If you find yourself or your new business searching for that audience then you know the challenges that we all face online. It can be difficult to get noticed, get links, and get in the search engines. Of course, you could pay someone thousands and thousand of dollars to get you the customers you need, but you either don’t have the money or can’t allocate it on that.

Zen and the Art of SEO... Do your ON-Page SEO upgrades and the FORGET about it!

There are literally thousands of SEO blogs, a handful of SEO books, and almost a lifetime of SEO tidbits that might make your site preform better in the Search Engines. In this post, I’d like to distill everything you’ll ever hear about Search Engine Optimization. I’m going to pare it down to an easy-to-understand picture so you can easily cut through the fog of Search Engine Optimization. Whether you are looking to hire a stellar SEO, want to do some SEO yourself, or just want to get an idea of how Search Engines interpret their results, this should help in your endeavor.

Search Engines are getting better everyday and giving better results. Slowly, Google and the gang are getting better at knowing if your site is authoritative, unique, and worthwhile to their searchers. We don’t know how they determine it, or quantify it, and we likely never will. But they know, and they are getting better at filtering the good and bad with each and every algorithm tweak.

Everything in SEO falls into two camps: On-Page SEO factors, and Off-Page SEO factors.

-On Page SEO Factors Include: Links around your own site, title tags, meta tags, your written content, etc. and optimizing all of this to give a clear picture to the Search Engines about your subject matter.

-Off Page SEO Factors Include: All the links to your site and their anchor text, all the buzz about your site, people remembering your site or message, viral linking, linkbait, and everything else that the creative marketers think up to get links and headspace.

Not only is the night air starting to feel a bit more spring-ish, but I noticed that there was a certain Buzz about downtown Columbus. And, oh yeah, there were lots of very big and strong people strolling around with huge bags.

It turns out that it’s the Arnold Classic time again. And it might be the perfect storm of events for Columbus with an Arnold Classic, First Friday, and Cage Fighting match all in one night. Geez.

The only thing that would make this more nuts is a Michigan vs. Ohio state game. Thank God for the off-season.

So the new blog design is working toward a more professional, and content-forward design. But in the process, it seems to have lost some of the ease of use that the previous design had. It doesn’t seem as personal or interactive.

One way to fix that was to make it easy to get in contact with me without a bunch of hassle. A great widget came up in my search. It is called txtdrop. You can see an example of it running in my sidebar.

The new wordpress theme for this site is almost fully complete. Check it out!

The new design is slowly falling into place. There are still a few things I’d really like to do to the design, like getting a new header, and adding some more interactive functionality.

But, of course, Clients always come before playing with this site, so it might be a shade longer before you see the new design in all of its full glory!

Hope everyone is having a great Sunday. Remember, spring is less is than a month away if you live in the Northern Hemisphere.

Cafe Apropo in Victorian Village is another awesome coffee shop in a town full of em.

About a year and a half ago, I was in Columbus visiting family. I was living in New York at the time, and was tired of the East Coast mentality.

Stopping into Cafe Apropo in Victorian Village was the turning point for me. It helped me decide to come back to Columbus… even if it did take a year.

And it’s funny. When I was here 1 1/2 years ago, I imagined myself doing web design and seo… living “downtown” (at that time, I didn’t even know enough about Columbus to distinguish Vic. Village from the Short North, Italian Village, or Grandview… it was all “downtown”… lol) and working at a bar to meet people. My daydream also included biking around town and catching up with old friends. (more…)
